A new series begins

/A new series begins

Same landscape as last year, yet very different paintings. What’s this new series all about? I got back last Wednesday from a week of painting in southern Spain. I started a new series of paintings inspired by the theme ‘The Soloist's Voice’. It was a week in the mountains sketching, searching, reflecting on how this theme could find expression. My catalyst question was how images inspired by the Spanish landscape could capture the dynamics of what happens when a soloist performs in an orchestra.

In my work as a strategic creativity coach with Know the Score, we bring clients into the heart of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. One of the metaphors we use in this context is The Soloist's Voice, referring to the way the orchestra adapts instantly to create context for a soloist to perform brilliantly within the ensemble. Everything is subordinate to the goal of setting up that moment’s star performer. The volume adjusts, other musical lines lift the key melody. All this provides a rich metaphor for how any team supports the performance of individual contribution.

The new series of paintings explore how the Spanish landscape can express this metaphor visually. The sketch shown here is one of the first explorations. We’ll see where this search leads over the coming weeks.
