For Abstract Expressionists, the authenticity or value of a work lay in its directness and immediacy of expression. The gesture, the artist’s “signature,” is evidence of the actual process of the work’s creation. (Stella Paul)
Last Tuesday in the studio I brought out a fresh canvas. The Images, stories, ideas were on my mind from my theme ‘You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden’.
I decided to put aside a given image, and just paint. What does it mean to ‘be light’?. It takes courage to live this out. Authenticity. It exposes one’s vulnerability. There’s no cover up, no re-working. One shot. It’s all out there for everyone to see.
Those who know my work may recognize my mark-making in this painting. I sought to release into a beautiful act without worry about the mess.
